July 11, Day 17

Today I woke up at 8:30 am to get ready for work. On the way, I stopped by a tiny shop selling Chinese pastries filled with red bean. I was starving so I decided to buy two. Expecting to pay maybe 2 RMB for one, it turned out each one was 80 cents, so 2 of them came out to be 1.60 RMBso about 25 cents USD. I know where I’m getting my breakfast everyday now!

I met with Byron and to go over the project. Our first task will be designing a primer for the 3′ UTR of CCNE1/2, the gene for cyclin 1 which is a regulator of the cell cycle. We believe that it is a target gene for miR-9. We will insert the 3′ UTR region into a vector with the luciferase gene. If miR-9 is added, and an absorbance is read, we can infer that miR-9 directly targets CCNE1/2.

In other news, we are trying to plan trip this weekend to Qingdao with the rest of the people in the program. It is about a 5 hour ride on the bullet train. QingDao is a beach town and is believed to be one of the most beautiful cities in China so we figured it would be a good idea to see it since we were here. We are still trying to figure out who wants/can go but hopefully we can decide soon and buy tickets.
