July 25 Day 30

1 month!. I can’t believe I have been here for 1 month already. It felt like yesterday I was staring out the airplane window at the rising Beijing sun.

It was pouring rain today. It seemed to rain all through the night because there were huge puddles all around during my walk to the bus stop. By huge I mean a couple inches thick. I thing I have noticed in Beijing is that the drainage system is pretty poor. In the U.S. we have those huge gutters that at times we think we might fall into. Here, they only have gutters half the size, and is covered with a grated sheet so it can be easily clogged with leaves and other debris.
Today was pretty much a free day at lab. There were no experiments to do, so we sat in the study room and chatted with the other lab members. Our conversation topics ranged from American politics to Tibet to Abortion laws. It was interesting to hear different perspectives on topics. With the recent accident with the high speed rail, we are having second thoughts about going to qing dao this weekend. Instead, we might go to tai shan, which is one of the five Daoist sacred mountains in China. The scenery is supposed to be incredible. We are going to the train station tomorrow to see the pricing.
